World’s greenest cruise ship

Ecoship
Japan (Tokyo)

Planned to sail in 2020, Peace Boat’s Ecoship will be the world’s most sustainable cruise ship – and a flagship for green innovation in passenger shipping. The 55,000 tonne cruise ship has been developed by a world-class team of over 30 engineers, scientists and thinkers from the fields of ship-building and cutting edge eco-technology – including renewable energy, marine engineering, naval architecture, biomimicry, biophilia and waste management.

Inspired by nature and with architectural naval design by Spanish company Oliver Design, the Ecoship Project is the brainchild of Peace Boat, which has grown from its foundation in 1983 to be Japan’s largest cruising organisation.

With a hull inspired by humpback whale, and ten unmistakable solar panel-covered sail masts, the energy efficient Ecoship will be a highly visible demonstration of sustainability in action in every port that it visits. Equipped with an ecofriendly hybrid engine, the vessel’s renewable energy features include retractable solar-panelled sails and wind generators, which significantly cut carbon dioxide emissions.

As well as on its participants. Ecoship also makes a positive human and social impact on local communities in ports of call. It encourages travelling the world as part of a close-knit, diverse and inter-generational community, engaging with communities around the world. Over the last 30 years, Peace Boat has chartered vessels which serve as a floating village, neutral meeting space and mobile classroom.

As the cruise industry continues to grow in popularity and as the new markets in East Asia expand, green cruising should preserve the natural environment. The global shipping industry is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and while the cruise industry represents only a tiny fraction of world shipping, it can contribute to solutions.
